I see my students come in the class almost walking into someone because their eyes are focused on the phone. As I walk in the mall I see similar examples of the same stuff. I’m not judging because I too use my phone for so many daily activities such posting this blog, notes in church, the youversion bible, texting and calling my family and friends, and so much more.
Is it a distraction, an excuse or a resource? I, myself can not define what the dependence of the phone is for anyone but myself but I do know that my phone is all three sometimes to me.
1 Corinthians 7:35 says
“And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction.”
According to this verse God has no intentions of controlling you but He does suggest you serve Him WITHOUT distractions.
Is my phone a distraction? Sometimes yes,
Is it an excuse? Sometimes, yes and is it a resource? Yes, sometimes. The time you put into anything that supersedes the time you will/ did spend in God’s word either praying, reading, meditating or living becomes your God.
Now, I know that when it comes to students and consumers shopping it’s a totally different. I would say that the majority of students are obsessed with many of the apps. They don’t socialize the way many of us who grew up in the 80’s. We connected face to face but their face to face is Snapchat, instagram, Twitter and Facebook. We had recess, basketball court, playground, church, school events and neighborhood hangout house. Same things different times.
One thing that is consistent is Church and school. Also, the world has many more distraction and also many different methods of getting the word out so many do not go to traditional churches or school. But what we need to recognize are we distracted by technology, are we using it as an excuse or are we using these new resources wisely. I know that my goal is to wisely use what God has allow to manifest though wisely using our talents and
